Default 307 HDI Timing Belt Concern

Hi All,
I’ve been concerned for a while now as there is no record of the timing belt been changed on our 307 CC HDI and its done 123K. I took the cover to have a quick peek and found that there was a “GATES Powergrip” belt fitted.
Does that mean it has been changed in the past or a standard Peugeot part??

It's likely to be an aftermarket belt.

I'd be tempted to change it, simply because you don't know the age of the belt, regardless of mileage.

Id say change it too, yes gates powergrip is aftermarket but you still don't know how old it is. Full kits for these engines are only £60 ish. Not massively hard to do either.

Gates make the belts for most cars both aftermarket AND original fitment.

If you can still read the writing on it then its highly unlikely to be the original belt as i would assume your car is now 10 years old.

Dayco was the OEM supplier to PSA. Not sure if they changed.

The last belt i fitted to my 2.0 HDI came from Peugeot (Sons staff discount made it cheapest option) and it was a Dayco so possible belt changed

It was said that Gates do date stamp the belts there is a code on the belt along the lines of Y WW XXX where Y is last digit of year followed by week number and then a three digit batch code.

You might be able to determine the age of the belt, but can you verify the likely mileage?, (old mot certificates or service history).
I would change it anyway, along with the pulleys, and the water pump as well.
Don't cheap out on any of this, premature failure of any of these components would be catastrophic for your engine. Gates or Dayco are both highly reputable brands ask your local motor factor who makes a good water pump.
Be very careful if you look on ebay, plenty of fakes around and guess how much redress you have if someone scams you?.

I've often bought a gates pump and belt kit, turns out cheaper too

Thasnk for the heads up on the date code.

The belt has 1 49 6DS printed on it, but what year is it? 2011?

Hello everyone,
I've just had a reply from Gates belt manufacturer regarding the timing belt fitted to our 307 HDI and it turns out that it was produced on the 05/12/2016, so that is a fantastic result for me and certainly takes the worry away for now.
It must have been changed by I'm guessing Farnell’s when the car was part exchanged or by the car seller I bought it from, but he says it wasn’t him and the chap previously owing the car didn't either.
