Default Possible coolant temp effecting mpg?.

Hi. Currentley my HDI's Averaging 42 mpg, and this is based on two 16 mile journeys 5 days a week, on both dual carriageway, single lane 50 mph, and round town driving. Im not a Heavy right footed type, and remain within speed limits. The Engine bareley ever breaks 70 on the temp gauge, and ive read that these engines do tend to run cool. Im thinking the stats stuck open, cus the pipes to the rad feel warm, around comfortable washing up water temp. Could or would this effect the fuel consumption?. Many Thanks Guys :-)
