Default P 306 HDI 2.0 2000 model

Hi
I have a 306 HDI 2.0 2000 model and its starting to jump or jerk at around 1st or 2nd gear doesn't in 3rd or 4th gear. The rev counter jumps up to 4-5000 revs and comes back down to normal. The engine is now switching off too, so I have to turn the ignition to start the engine again. I've recently had the clutch replaced but don't think its related to that? The engine management light comes on and am wondering if its an electrical fault?

Can anyone help and let me know what it could be?

Thanks

Check the earth strap on the gearbox.
