I have a cut out problem with my 2000 306 2L HDI

Problem: The engine cuts out at higher revs.
#I can drive it even at 100kmph if I go through the gears and keep the revs below 2100.
#When I rev it higher than that while driving I can feel the engine shudder and if I reduce the revs then can keep it going. If I keep accelerating it stalls, the dash lights up with stop and an engine light stays on. I can re start the engine after turning the car off for a few seconds (while still rolling).
#It idles fine.
#I can rev it to 4000 in the work shop no problem.
#It seems to be related to heat, only happens when the car is hot (after 5 km of driving)
#I have changed the fuel filter and cleaned out the air filter, no differance.
#I have added clear fuel hose to look for air bubbles, there are no bubbles.
#I have added a lift pump to increase fuel supply to the injector pump, that did not help.
#I have taken it to the local Pug specialist, they said there are no faults being logged, they have no idea what the problem is and suggested I try an injector place.
#I have trawled forums for a fix and have not found one, EGR valve keeps coming up with similar problems but my car idles fine.
Any ideas much appreciated!

pumps

Question, is the lift pump in the tank meant to be running the whole time while the engine is running? I noticed there is allot of resistance to sucking fuel through the lift pump in the tank it when it is off.

Does the injector pump suck fuel to it when driving or does the lift pump push fuel to the injector pump?

second mechanics opinion

I have the second mechanics opinion, here is what he found:
# Fault code: Low fuel rail pressure
#The lift pump is running continuously
#He is going to check the lift pump pressure (it fills the fuel filter fast I don't think it is faulty) and if that is ok he says the next step is to change the pressure switch.
# If that does not work then it is the injector pump.

Any ideas on this?

What's the live data readings for fuel pressure when idling and at 2000 and at 4000

You was asked to check live data but it seems this has not been done and sounds like your mechanic has the classic change parts until fixed attitude

Check the wiring to the pressure sensor on the common rail

Is there any smoke before it cuts out

I had similar issues few years back and it was the fuel pressure regulator valve.

You can take them off and clean them up, which I tried originally but it only lasted two days before problem reappeared, so replaced in the end.

I guess if its consistent to failing under load/at speed, then its worth cleaning up, refitting and trialing?
