Default 306 lx 1.6 fuel gauge :S

i had a smell of petrol in my car so i checked under the back seat and as i thought the owned before had sucked all the petrol out via the tap under the seat i put it back on as it should however a day later my car says its empty on fuel so i put 20 worth in still it doesnt budgejust the empty light on but there is fuel in it as i drive it round and just fill it up when ive done a journey any ideas what it is ?

Inside your fuel tank is a float that sits on top of the fuel inside your tank that tells the car how much fuel you got in the tank. sometimes when let the fuel run low the float get stuck to the side of the fuel tank. either try filling it up to the brim or get a friend to help you, stand either side of the car and rock it side to side. this may disoldge it.
if that dont work you may have to look into replacing the sensor.
