Default 306 1.6 petrol 1998 battery drain.

Howdy all.

My issue is as follows.

Try to start the car (turn it over) and the starter motor runs at less than normal revs, sometimes it sticks.
After the car has been running for a while it starts with little to no problems.

(1) Replaced battery.
Solved the problem temporarily

(2) Went to garage, had a small service and replaced neutral cable from battery to frame and engine.
Car ran normally for 2 days then back to starting problem.

(3) Returned to garage with car.
Car made a liar out of me and started without hesitation or problems.

(4) Tried to leave work.
Car would not turn over. Starter motor running at very low revs (almost sticking). Tried that for a few mins, battery flat
Plugged in my portable battery via the cigarette lighter for 7 mins; Car started with very little struggle.

Went back to the garage (again), mechanic tried to start the car but it struggled.
Measured voltage from the alternator at the battery 13.5 volts DC
Changed out battery, car started no problem.

In the opinion of the mechanic the alternator is screwed but I'm not fully convinced. Given the general electrical problems with the 306 series I would tend to believe that there is a fault in the wiring from the alternator.

Could someone provide an electrical drawing for a 1.6l petrol pug 5 door 1998 build.

Any one got any other ideas?

It sounds like your alternator could be the cause of your problems. Trust your mechanic on this one

I'll use contact spray tomorrow on the car and measure the alternator at the source to see if there is a voltage difference.

Should I find a difference between the battery terminal connection and the alternator I'll give him the go ahead to replace it.

Any idea as to the cost of a used but refurbished alternator for a 1.6l petrol pug 306 build year 1998?

It sounds like your alternator is not puttin out 14volts as it should be. And yes i mean 14 not 12. If your alternator is givin out less than 14 volts at idle with your lights, blowers up full and heated screen on then is knackered.
Not sure on price of replacement sorry

Quick look on euro car parts and they start at 110quid new. Worst is 263

You could pick up a reconditioned alternator. They're much cheaper and may take your old one as PX.

Luckily I found a car breakers close to my mechanic that has a unit for sale for 50.

I'll collect it after work tomorrow and drop the car off to my mech Friday morning.

There was a new surprise waiting for me this morning (frosty as it was), the intermittent setting for the front wipers doesn't work any more. Instead it acts as if it is at setting number 2 (normal wiper speed), even better if I turn the wipers off while in intermittent mode the wipers just stop and don't return to the rest position at the bottom of the wind screen.

Pick up a wiper motor while you're there. Sounds like one of the three prongs in the motor has corroded away.

This is a rear, but the principle is the same:

Annnddd the drama continues

Driving to the car breakers the car conked out at the traffic lights, luckilly I got it started straight away.

Got to the car breakers.. guess what.. yes, the car died again (emergency battery recharge was necessary).

Success, found a used alternator at the car breakers so my mechanic can install it tomorrow.
Even better the car breaker measured the battery while the engine was running and the head lights were on.. voltage was?? come on guess 12 volts (too low obviously).

Car conked out again at a yield sign while I struggled to get home.

Lets see what happens tomorrow after the alternator is replaced (and the battery).

Thanks Gibbo for the information about the wipers but (guess what) they are running normally again, lets see if it remains so after the alternator is replaced.

Drama Sorted (and not cheap)

Looks like 2 problems we the cause of all my woes

1st the fuel filter was on it's last legs
2nd and most important the earth/neutral connections were corroded.

Time line.

Neutral cable from chassis to the battery broke off where it wasn't visible so the car was acting weird for a while.

Repaired cable but it was too late apparently.

What happened next is now very obvious (after the fact)
Dynamo was damaged due to the earth/neutral cable being damaged (increases resistance which heats up, etc)

Battery will not correctly charge because the dynamo is damaged.

Vicious circle follows: low charge voltage so the battery can't charge correctly.
Winter sets in and more is demanded of the battery as the alternator gets worse.
The car won't turn over correctly even with a new battery.

So you think the starter motor is knackered (which it isn't).


So for all you Peugeot fans out there NEVER, I repeat NEVER assume that French electrical systems are sound.
