Default 2000 306 interior light problem

Hi folks
I have carried out a quick search, but without any luck....
A mate has a 2000 plate 306, and none of the dash instrument lights and heater control lights light. Obviously it could be all the bulbs failing at the same time, but I think that is unlikely.

Before we strip the dash and centre console to check all the bulbs, is there a particular fuse, or something else which could cause this?

Have you checked the dimmer wheel next to headlamp level switch

does that actually turn the lights off, and affect the heater controls as well?

My 306 does that as well... turns off all lights if you push the wheel too far... I quite liked that "feature"
