Default Engine fault, maintenance needed

hi all
The missus got this message tonight then a map to the nearest garage. the spanner is now permanently showing.
is there any way of knowing the severity of the problem, it's going to cause a lot of hassle taking it to a garage tomorrow.
Thanks

Only way I know is to plug a diagnostic tool into the OBD2 socket and read the fault(s). The best tool is Peugeot Planet 2000.

Lots of info here.

Thanks Ian. Don't personally have such a tool. I think it'll have to go to the garage tomorrow as the light has stayed on. Hopefully nothing too serious.

The vehicle got checked today by our local garage (free of charge as they normally service the car ).

There were multiple faults found by the diagnostic, but the one highlighted by the garage was "knock detector fault", one temporary, one permanent.
She's taking it to Peugeot on Friday, hopefully it will be an issue under the warranty.

I had the same a few weeks ago and they originally said they would have to get new parts but then a few days later said it needed the engine (same one as yours) replaced due to a phenomenon of ignition before spark. They had it for nearly 3 weeks. I had only done 11,500 miles. Hopefully this doesn't happen to you.

that doesn't sound good. Did you have any issues with the engine beforehand to suggest there was a problem ? She says hers seems fine.

Also what did you do for a car in that 3 weeks, you've got me worried now !

It did occasionally lose power for a second when going up hills.

They gave me a car when they had one available.

Yes I was wondering if there was a courtesy car...what did they give you and was it on permanent loan until you got yours back ?.
Also was there any cost to you for the repairs.

The missus just informed me that our local garage mentioned the exact same fault.."ignition before spark". So i'm trying to get as genned up as possible before she takes it in on Friday.

I really appreciate all this information from you

I just got a Peugeot 206 and gave it back when I picked mine up.

Everything was covered under the warranty.

They had to get Peugeot's permission to change the engine which probably added a few days but when it was ordered it arrived within a couple of days and then took another day to fit and test.

Thanks for all the helpful info Waldgrim. She's taking it in tomorrow morning so lets see what happens.
