Default Stodgy brakes HDi. Vacuum pump?

Does anyone have experience of fault-finding the vacuum pump and servo, please?

Symptoms are that the servo assistance is variable and slow to come in. Also, if I push the brake pedal parked at idle, the pedal takes 2 to 3 seconds to go down.

If I use the brakes downhill with the engine off, they are heavy but there is no delay. I changed the air filter recently. Could I have disturbed something behind the engine, perhaps?

Thanks if anyone can advise.
