Default Power steering faulty.

Power steering faulty. This is the message i got today when i tried to drive my 2011 peugeot 207,also i have a heavy steering wheel,so the car is undriveable.i had a quick look on these forums about the problems it was showing up and it does not look good.Surely a car that has done only 26,000 miles should not be getting these major problems. Can anyone give me any advice about this problem. Thanks Andrew Reid.

have you got an ABS light on and is the speedometer working? The power steering on this car is electrically operated and receives commands from the ABS computer. When this throws a wobbly (common) it affects power steering and speedo (and ABS system).

My wife's 207 had the ABS problem at 26k miles and it's a common fault which affects the electric steering. Before I had the rack replaced I would have the motor and torque sensor checked otherwise you might find that after a new rack is fitted the problem hasn't gone away. The motor is part of the rack and evidently can't be replaced separately.

Just so that you aware. The power steering is speed sensitive so that you get more assistance at low speeds (when parking for instance). The vehicle speed is measured using the signals from the ABS wheel sensors and this in turn controls the response of the steering motor although since the speedometer is still working it implies that the ABS unit is OK . I would check any connectors on the power steering motor just in case it's a connector fault.

Does that include fitting etc? There are a few new motors on ebay for a lot less than that. When my wife's ABS unit failed (600) at 26k miles and 4 years old I approached Peugeot but since I hadn't bought it from a Peugeot dealer they refused to make a contribution.
