Default Grinding noise when starting engine

I have an '08 reg 1.4 petrol 207, every time I start the engine it makes a grinding noise. No warning lights, no other problems (as far as I'm aware). The car has done approx 36k and is due for a service.

It sounds a bit like grinding gears - I do put the car into gear when it's parked but I never start it in gear.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I have no idea about cars so please try to answer in simple terms!

Sounds to me like you have got worn teeth on either the starter motor pinion or the flywheel ring gear. Starter motor pinion is probably the most likely of the two.

If that's what it is, is it likely to be expensive to get fixed?

Many thanks.

If it is one of those then it would be cheaper and easier if it was the starter motor. If the flywheel ring gear has gone then it's the gearbox out and possibly a new flywheel. In the good old days it was possible to replace the ring gear but don't know if you can these days.
