Default ECU fried? Advice please

Hello,

My sisters 2009 Peugeot broke down and just wouldn't start. RAC stated that there was no oil and this had likely damaged the engine.

Two mechanics were unable to diagnose the problem as the usual diagnosing kit couldnt get anything from the car.

It has then gone to a team who are specialists in electrics and they say the ECU has fried and it needs to be repaired to start the car.

Its going to cost 600 to get the ECU sent away and repaired.

We know absolutely nothing about cars and wanted to get some advice on what we should do.

Does that sound normal? Our main concern is that this is paid for and then there is still a problem.

Rac says engines knackered garage says ecus knackered

I say its wiring and neither is knackerd

Sounds like none of the people who looked at it know for sure what is wrong !

Sorry rushed right in.

This is what worries me. I did read on this forum that to send away an ECU for repair costs about 100.00, would that be correct? Almost 600 feels a bit much and then to discover it's that causing the problem would be money down the drain.

There are issues with ecus on these but the real cause is water getting inside it through the wiring loom and if this is the case the ecu will not be fixable anyway.

You need someone who knows what to look for and how to diagnose faults properly to look at it.
