Default Confused by software downloads?

hi

I own a Peugeot 207 1.4 07 and it's been down to the local Peugeot mechanics a couple of times recently for some work.

To start with, it would loose all power pulling away, to the point of almost stalling. It was also a bit sticky between 1900 and 2300 revs in all gears.

1st Visit: Diagnostics said Oxygen Sensor was a fault, but the mechanics said that that fault code was a bit unreliable, it only needed a software download. Software download was done, and car was better pulling away.

Still wasn't right in that rev range, backing off and spluttering.

2nd Visit (4 weeks later), mechanics said that the oxygen sensor had now failed completely. Receptionist says that they tend to fail a few months after coming in for the first software download. Sensor was replaced, and another software download was done, 'to tell the car it's had a new oxygen sensor.'
I didn't have to pay for another diagnostic this time as it was so near to the first visit.

The car is running better, but I'm not convinced it's running quite as well as it could be. Maybe it needs a good service.

I'm a bit miffed as I think that the oxygen sensor should have been replaced on the first visit. If the sensor had lasted the few months before failing, then I would have had to pay for another diagnostic.

Does this seem reasonable to you guys?
Does the car need a download everytime it has a new part fitted? Haynes manual doesn't mention downloads, so I'm a bit confused.

Thanks
