Default Braking fault, Abs fault, stop, hard brakes with no assistance.

Hi everyone.

I have a peugeot 207 1.4 Hdi 07 plate and as I was practicing my reverse parks Ive 2 faults show Braking system fault and Abs fault and also stop light. I was just around the corner from home so I drove back home to check. The brakes were fine and felt as normal on the way home until I parked up. The brakes were really hard to press down. I switched the engine off and on. The warning light came on again and the brakes were still stiff. I topped up brake fluid which didnt solve the problem.

I took to a local garage for him to diagnose and when he plugged it in he said it was the Abs unit it was intermittently communication with the diagnostics. Well anyway he said i would need a new Abs unit but he wasn't sure how long it would take for him to do it as he'd never done one before. He is a Vw/Audi specialist but extended family so thats why I took it there. As hed never done a peugeot Abs I thought I better look for someone whos done one before? Im not even sure if anybody other than Peugeot can reprogram them in. One very helpful garage said to me check the wiring check the vacuum hoses on the brake servos. Does anyone have any similar experiennce?

Also thankyou to anyone who has taken the time to reply to my previous messages, or tried to reply to me. I keep getting messages saying my inbox is full or PM quota exceeded so I am not sure people are seeing my replies. Ihave had some lovely people contact me with greay advice and as someone who knows bugger all about cars its so helpful and I appreciate it.

if your using a second hand abs unit just match serial numbers and put it on with no programming. A new one will need programming.
But get your mech to pull all main plugs on ecu/fusebox and also abs unit and check for corrosion on any pins/plugs first.

Thankyou for your reply. Its going in to the garage in the morning and I will mention all those things.

Im glad you said one with a matching serial number can be put in without reprogramming. Thats made me feel a little bit better about the situation.

I am hoping it is not going to be a whole new ABS but now i know if it is it can be done.

I have got everything crossed its some dodgy wiring or something. Another thing I will mentionls that maybe a month ago or so I clipped the kerb and smashed the wheel trim. I didnt think anything of it at the time, just took the wheel trim off and
The car drove with no issues so I assumed all was good with the wheels/ tyres,/ braking. I did clip the kerb at about 50 so i will mention this to the garage incase this could be the cause.

most used ones (ebay?) will have the ecu and pump bolted together with three screws, i would change it as a unit but you will need the numbers on the ecu and pump.
Ask them to check the servo vacuum, just in case.

This is what it looks like with the bracket removed.

I would not expect a hard pedal for a faulty ABS pump hard pedal is usually lack of vacuum but your other warnings may well be from the pump just sounds strange to have 2 problems that to all intents are separate at the same time.

ABS and vacuum assistance are totally separate things

Thats exactly my thinking the Abs going wouldn't cause the brakes being majorly stiff, so i was reluctant to believe it was ABS. My research pointed to the brake servos as people above have said.

And funnily enough on the way to the garage today- No lights on the dash, no warnings and the vacuum assistance on the brakes seems to be working... odd?

I have asked the mechanic to look at the fusebox, plugs and pins for any corrosion.

Fingers, toes, arms, legs, everything crossed!!!

Thanks stripe88. Those pictures will definitely come in handy for if the ABS Unit does need replacing how do you actually get to it, from underneath, take the wheels off? I dont know where abouts to look for it, to get the serial numbers. I would be replacing the whole thing if it turns out that's the problem. I have seen on ebay the 2nd hand ones for around 100quid but want to be 100% it would be the right one.

just poke your head under front near side, although to see the ecu numbers you will need to get the bracket off, best make room wheel/liner and horn, then its just screwed on to the abs and one bolt in engine bay if i remember.
You will see when you make space, been many years since i did it.


you may be able to do it from under car without removing stuff.

Well folks bit of an update. Mechanic checked the car and it came up as an Abs unit fault, also a fault with the ECU which he says is the more worrying fault. He can replace ABS for 150-200 but says we may end up throwing more money at it afterwards. He says until the Abs is fixed and then we plug it in we wont know how serious it is. But in his opinion he would get rid of it and start again. At the moment this doesnt feel like an option. I dont have loads of money to buy a new car and I have my driving test booked on the 15th November.

I just feel like completely giving up now.

first did he pull the electrical plugs in the ecu and abs? if so were they dry and no green corrosion.
If so i would try just swapping the abs ecu unit, you may get lucky and find a cheap used part, you will need to take pics of the numbers on the abs ecu box and pump, common fault so loads on ebay.
I know its a pain spending on something you dont know will cure, but i wouldnt be messing with the engine ecu just yet.

But how is the car now? any warnings any hard brake pedal?
