Default 207SE 1.4 16v lack of power in 2nd gear

My 2008 Peugeot 207 SE 1.4 16V been having this problem for a while now, mainly from cold when i change into 2nd gear the just no power it seems to bog right down and take ages to get upto speed, all the other gears are fine on acceleration.

I have the car serviced regularly & there is no warning lights on the dash.

I've been told it could be a faulty oxygen sensor that causing the problem, as it pretty common fault with this car.

Has anybody else had this fault before & manage to get it sorted.

Had a similar problem but mine was a bit juddery in second,ended up needing a new set of spark plugs.

spark plugs are not changed with every service so i would change them first and see if it makes a difference

Having the same issue in 1st gear between 1000-2000revs ,changed spark plugs,pulleys,belt,filters,oils,anyone solved this problem? I have the 207GT 150Thp 07 plate

I have a 207 150 THP 2008 plate with exactly the same power loss issues code P2191. I changed oxygen sensor ( top one) and checked plugs /coils etc and all seems to be ok. Pug main dealer has done diagnostic checks and says IT COULD be the timing chain and tensioner issue. They cannot guarantee that will cure it is just looks like it could be this inherent problem of intermittent limp mode issue and they quoted "approx minimum 300 " and said it could possibly be up to 1,000 depending what they find.

What puzzles me is, if it is a timing issue why does the car run smoothly,(but on reduced power) it even idles nicely at 800 rpm. Also if its timing why does it go into limp mode intermittently, surely if the timing is out, it should run poorly and misfire etc. Lastly why does the EMl go off after a while of being on? It could remain on for some days at the time and then out of the blue it will go off and the car runs fine again for a while.

Any ideas or assistance to find what the real fault is would be appreciated, before I drive it off a cliff or something.

Wingers....in case if fault p2191 the timing should always be checked. There are other possible causes for the fault but timing is 99% the cause.

Where are u from?

To check timing isn't too big a job,;full timing job is quoted for 6 hours but most master techs can do in 4 hours now. Parts are 250 quid approx. Not something that can be done by corner of the road garage or at home unless u have done it before and got the proper tools.

Thanks ADS77, I'm based in Anglesey, North Wales. Could they check if it is the timing that's at fault before they embark on stripping it and carrying out the full replacement?

Yeh they remove the camshaft cover, turn engine over by hand then lock the flywheel.

Will then put the cam locks on and if they don't fit properly the timing is out.

Then they will measure the tensioner by putting in a dummy tensioner, tightening it to a specific setting then remove it and measure. That will determine if needs a reset or full timing change.

Thanks ADS77, I will mention that to them so as to pretend what I'm talking about. They quoted approx. min 300 depending what they find. When I asked if it might be a lot more the answer was that it could be 600 or maybe 1,000 they just don't know what the problem is and what they might find. You would think being Pug specialists with all the equipment and all the experience they've had with this problem that they could give a more accurate quote. Its a question now of whether its worth spending that kind of money on the car ( only done 36,000)
