Default 207 gti engine repair in SE London

Hi all.

I've got a 207gti and my timing chain did what it was expected, jumped a tooth (or I hope it did so). Now the car is in limp mode and I'm struggling to find a garage to repair it. So far, they either quote me ridiculous amounts or deny it altogether due to lack of "special" tools.

Does anyone know of a specialist in London, preferably in the South East?

So far I got two quoting 1k each, one of them was also absolutely certain he'll have to replace the chain.

So basically paying for the chain kit (which might not even be needed apart from the tensioner), the labour and the timing kit and have a bit of extra just in case...

well tbh if the chain has jumped, its pretty certain it has lengthened the chain which will need a full replacement of all the timing parts done.

parts retail this now from Peugeot for 360, there is no kit as such, its a list of individual parts that are fitted depending on the finding of the timing, basically if its lengthened the chain or not.

labour wise its about 6 hours especially if not used to doing it, we can do it in 4 hours now but that's cause done loads and look after a lot of the 207's in the area and friends travel from downsouth to let us work on the cars as its cheaper even with the travel and hotel etc !

so around 1k is correct if its from a dealer, but its crucial for these engines the mechanic has the proper correct genuine Peugeot tools, which most garages wont have unless they are a dealer, the tolerances are so fine for the timing being in or out, the copy tools are not of good enough quality to do the job so the car is spot on.

360 retail for the whole lot (chain, tensioner, gaskets, guides and all the bits and bobs), so 300 trade if not less. That leaves us with 700 for 4 to 6 of work and that is ok? Personally, I feel this is a bit high. Plus that is the max, if everything end up needing to be replaced.

I never spoke for a dealership, it's always tricky to find one with experienced mechanics (that haven't gone solo) and they are noticeably more expensive. I would be happy to be proven wrong by the way.

As these engines have been around for some time, I am/was expecting some independent garages to have the know-how and the tools, and that other owners might one to suggest.

At the end if I need to pay 1k to get it fixed, I might as well get a second one and keep this for parts.

I stripped mine for parts and removed the chain etc to strip off the head and i recon i would not want to put 1 back together

As said you NEED the correct tools and these need paid for so part of the cost is to recoup the cost of the tools then its time its not a quick fix by any means.

I'm also living in London and can highly recommend this guy:

https://www.peugeot-repairs.co.uk/

His name is Alan and he sorted the timing on my 2008 207SW 1.6Vti. What I liked was his approach of not going for the most expensive option first.

I had a dephaser issue that many garages would have insisted on fixing by replacing the full chain kit and dephasers. My issue was caused by poor workmanship by a Portsmouth independent however since the chain, guides and tensioner were only 1500mls old, Alan did the sensible thing and just replaced the dephasers.

He quotes full timing kit replacement as 500 to 600 all-in with genuine Peugeot parts. He has all the tools, a real enthusiast and just does Peugeots and Citroens. Nice guy too.

Regards,
Ivor NW1
