Default 2011 207 1.6 HDi oil usage

Hi,

I recently bought a 2011 207 1.6 HDi with approx. 45000 miles on the clock. I checked the oil after approx. 1500 miles and was surprised to see I needed to add a litre.

The exhaust doesn't look bluish, there are no oil puddles under the car, and the coolant reservoir doesn't seem to have any deposits. It drives pretty smoothly and I haven't noticed any performance issues.

I brought it back to the dealer and they told me they didn't find any leaks.

Is this normal? I've had my share of ancient, high-mileage beaters from other manufacturers and none of them used anywhere close to this amount of oil. I used 5w30, and it doesn't seem to have used any more oil in the approx. 500 miles since I topped it off. I don't know what grade of oil was in there when I got it.

Would appreciate any advice you could give me. Thanks.

Mine doesn't seem to use anything and never had to top up between service intervals.

Maybe the dealer didn't put enough in to start off with.

You said you checked the oil after 1500 miles - did you check it before?

As above, it may have been low already...

Can't speak for the diesels, but the 1.4 and 1.6 petrols are oil burners, about half a litre every 1000 miles in my 1.4

Same my 1.6VTi about a litre every 2500 miles...
Gibbo did you do some experiments to check where is this oil going? Mine is smoking if left idling too much that could point to the valve seals, but cannot be sure (it has 120k miles so its pretty normal).
Compression in my engine is within specs (in fact if spot on) and the car is going well.
I did switch to 5w40 and noticed a reduction in oil usage which again could point to valve seals.
At the moment I am running with a 5W50 to see if it has any impact on it.

I have always suspected the PCV valve in the head cover to be badly engineered and possibly cause of the leaks, I tried to disconnect it close the vacuum and leave the engine breath naturally. I did not notice any particular different oil consumption but I did run for little time.
Now I hope the 5W50 would do the trick as I am out of ideas about how to fix this.

My 1.6 HDI 307 used maybe 1 litre per 4000 miles

Hope you checked the dipstick completely in its holder if at the top that might make you add more than needed

Normally the diesels don't use oil unless high mileage.
Also did dealer service it before you collected?
A lot of garages only fill sump to half way on dipstick and not max, saves them money!
