Default Uncoiling item in engine...

I have a W reg (2000) 106 Diesel. Apologies in advance, I know very little about engines so my description may be poor...

I just noticed the following which I have tried to take a picture of. In the engine block there is a coiled piece of black metal, and it appears to be uncoiling from the inside. It is just off centre to the right in the photo. Car seems to be running fine. Anyone know what this is, and do I need to get it fixed?

Cheers.

Ah, oh. How embarrassing. Yes it is a roll of tape. I *did* say that I didn't know anything when I posted... It really felt like a metal coil and I was nervous about messing with it...

Thanks very much for a quick and accurate reply.
