Smile Peugeot 106 1.1 Gearbox

Hello all.

I'm rather hoping someone out there will be able to help me with my problem so here goes!

My old 1997 106 gearbox has started making a scraping noise on acceleration and deceleration leaving me in no doubt that it is now passed it's best.
It is not the clutch as I have just changed that, including the bearing sleeve.

I have the chance of getting hold of a 2003 Saxo 1.1 gearbox and on first impression it looks exactly the same but would be grateful if anyone could tell me if there are any differences stopping me from directly fitting this to my old 106.

Incidentally my 106 has 3 stud wheels and the newer Saxo is of the standard 4 stud though I'm almost certain this would not make any difference.

Sorry I have not introduced myself yet as a new member so please consider this post as also my introduction and I look forward to both receiving and giving advice to any posts I can.

Kind Regards.

Both models have MA gearboxes and TU1M engines so I would think the Saxo box would fit the 106. Mind you I`ve never done this.
The only problems I can think of would be,??? The Saxo will have a speed sensor and your 106 could have a speedo cable??.If so just swop the o/side drive shaft housing on the box.
The other problem could be the gearshift linkage is different?? one lever on the MA box is a simple bolt on part, the other lever is part of the internals and a box strip down.
So,it could be a case of "suck it and see".Place the two boxes side by side and go through the motions, check this and that etc,not forgetting the driveshafts.

The other choice is to take your box to a gearbox specialist for a rebuild.I bet all it would need is a set of bearings.

check the oil level in your box, or change the oil to one that peugeot recomends. It could be low on oil or have wrong oil in. Seen it make gearboxes noisey in the past.

Hi all.

Thanks for your quick reply.

My gearbox has a speed sensor and not a cable so all will be well there.

Can I take it that the drive shafts and gearbox main shaft to flywheel will be exactly the same.

As for the oil, it was renewed with the clutch and is as per specification.

Kind regards.

Paul.

Main shaft to flywheel,Yes.
Driveshaft, not sure?? all I can say is that the driveshaft oil seals are the same for both boxes,so your half way there??.
Its always like this with this sort of job.You never can be sure until you try it

ALL 1.1 MA boxes are interchangeable only things that differ are speedo drives and selector levers 1.4 boxes are interchangeable too but shaft sizes changed you can fit a 1.4 box if you use 1.4 shafts the boxes are the same even in 206s except 1.6s they have a special box that only fits 1.6 due to the different clutch system !!

Obviously there are ratio differences but if you fit a 1.1 from an ax 205 106 saxo it will work just check the levers are the same if not swap them first as its easier to swap out the car.
