Default changing Rear axle

My youngest son's 106 has worn radius arm bushes on the o/s (we knew it was worn when we bought it but thought it would've lasted longer),anyhow is it worth trying to repair the axle ourselves with replacement bushes etc which seem to be under 30 or just change the complete axle??
I can get a fully recon'd axle from here for 239 delivered

A local garage has quoted 80-100 to change the axle and tbf this sounds competitive...................whats your thoughts ??


Also has anyone done tis themselves and if so what sort of job is it?? (if its a bitch the garage i doing it),there will be 3 of us doing it 2 competent home mechanics and a 17 yr old first year apprentice engineer.

I had to replace the rear axle on my 306 estate a couple year back. We got it second hand, replaced the break pipes (idiots had cut the old ones off) and me and my dad fitted it pretty quickly.

It remains one of the easiest jobs we ever did on the car. On 306 was jack underneath it, undo the bolts and lower.

the 106 appears to be the same, ive watched a video on youtube and it really does look simple. just worried about buying second hand as its such a common fault

I had same worries as well, but we got lucky on the car i got it from. Just been on the link and if they are offering a 2 year warranty I would prob pay that bit more and go for peace of mind.

When I did my suspension I checked everything out and came to the decision that it looked far easier to replace the complete axle than to replace the bushes

When I still had my 306 I opted to buy a recoditioned axle rather than mess about. You have to remember most in the scrap yards will be of a similar age and mileage so you won't be much better off.

I bought a reconditioned axle and asked for it to be set 20mm lower than standard to match the -20mm springs I had for the front.
Fitted it up no problem at all as a one man job although an extra pair of hands and a second trolley jack would have made life so much easier.
Used new motaquip mounts all round at the same time (do not get cheap ebay ones - I've seen too many split), new braided flexis, rebuilt rear drums etc etc.


Lowered it to ground - the idiots had set it 20mm higher than standard!!!
Bear in mind looking at that photo the boot is full and its got a tow bar adding to the rear weight.



Anyway, as it was a freshly built axle it didn't take much to lower as the splines had been freshly greased.



Long and short of it, if you plan to keep the 106 for any length of time opt for a reconditioned axle, budget for new mounts and brake parts etc for when you transfer them across and you should find its a straight forward job.

a few years back I had the same 'bush' problem on a 106 mechanic said it is a bitch of a job to change bushes so went for a secondhand. bought a whole car from e b a y and sod me the axles are different(same year model etc) one was 3 stud the other 4,so lots of messing to complete the job.

as Private says get the re-con axle and change yourself,took my mechy about 2hours

Not as many replies as i expected, thought this was a really common fault on 106/206/306, but it appears not many have had this problem.

I wonder if lack of replies means that most people go to a garage and are quoted 5/600 quid and then just scarp the car

yea that's what i'm thinking. Worst part is the parts are only about 30 a side
