Default Changing 106 diesel rear axle mountings

Hi all. Could someone give me a thumbnail outline of what needs to be done for this? I have all the parts ready (except 2 of the 4 mounting bolts - does anyone know where I might find them? Dean Hunter in Yorkshire only had 2 in stock, which I already bought from him).

I know that for changing the rear axle mountings/bushings, the whole axle does not have to come off, and the axle main bearings - which are a sealed unit - don't need to be dismantled either. I also have heard that you ideally should have a special tool to get the old bushings off and put the new ones on, at it takes something like 10 tons of concentrated force to get them off or on.

Specifically, what has to be moved out of the way or removed completely, to allow access to the mountings? How much clearance is needed to get the bushings off? Etc.

Many thanks in advance,
Nelson

Do you mean the four rubber with metal insert bushes that hold the axle to the body? If so, in the past ive drilled round the outer part of the bush then hammered the remains out. Its always been an axle off job though, so I cant help any further other than to say Ive used a massive vice to get new ones in, or if poly bushes they go in by hand.

Thanks for these details. I was wondering one more thing - do the mountings actually go through the chassis itself, or the axle assembly?

Just through the axle. Take note of which bushes have two washers each, and which have only one - I forget every time I do it then have to look up diagrams on Servicebox!

Although its possible to drop or replace an axle on your own, it helps to have an assistant to do up the bolts while you make sure the axle is pulled back evenly at each side.
