Default 2007 1007 1.6 Sport 2 Tronic - charging problem

Hi, another Peugeot newbie here!

I need some help and advice about my 1007 1.6 Sport 2-Tronic please. Recently, it flattened the battery during a trip to work and watching the car switch off the auto gearbox, ABS, ESP and air bags at 60MPH was no fun! I just about managed to get off the motorway before it expired completely. I completed my journey to work with a spare battery the wife brought out to me, but even that that was giving out as I arrived at work.

I have changed the alternator for a reconditioned one - what a bundle of laughs that was - not. It took me three hours to do a job that would have taken 15 minutes on a Mk.2 Ford Escort, and yet they call this progress .

Changing the alternator has made little or no difference, the car still keeps flattening batteries and I am having to charge the battery just to get to and from work.

The fault normally starts as three beeps and no message on the multi display, then I get an 'Auto Gearbox Fault' before it starts giving me a battery warning light at idle that gradually gets worse. I realise that the 'Auto Gearbox fault' is the first indication that the car is shutting things off to save power, but the worrying thing is that the car isn't charging the batteries itself.

I've just got the ODB Lexia interface and the Peugeot Planet software, in case I need to do some brain surgery, but I'm at a loss as to where to start looking for the fault after having changed the alternator. I believe that the thin wire to the alternator is a digital field connection and how can I test this connection to see if it's trying to turn the charging on and off?

I plan to get a new battery but I'm not confident that this alone will solve the problem. I'm getting to my wit's end trying to sort this fault out and I could use all the help I can get. Apart from the lack of charging issue, everything else on the car appears to work as normal and I am observing the precautions for disconnecting and re-connecting the battery to aviod corrupting any of the car's BSI software.

If the software on the car does need it's BSI software re-programming, is this part of Peugeot Planet? If not, where can I get the software file from to re-program the BSI?

I know, so many questions, but I am used to using tools and old-school mechanical stuff, but these engine management electronics baffle me completely.

If it helps, my car has the TU5JP4 16-valve engine that is also fitted to the 206, 307 and Citroen C2 models.

You need to see what voltage you are getting from the new alternator..

It maybe that your reconditioned unit is no good for the car. I had this problem with a Citroen Picasso. 2 recon alternators failed to cure the charging problem. In the end I went to the scrappy and picked one up which sorted the problem

I'm going to fit a brand new battery this weekend, then fire up Diagbox and clear out any fault codes that are present, then monitor the battery voltage to see what's going on.

The batteries I am using to get to and from work aren't holding a full charge and that's why I think a new battery may resolve the problems. Until I get a stable base voltage from the battery there's no point trying to monitor the voltage, as the alternator is probably struggling to keep up with the falling voltage.

Nope, no further on after fitting a brand new battery. I ran Peugeot Planet 2000 and got lots of "Low voltage" warnings (thanks Captain Obvious) but no error messages that gave me any serious clue as to what the fault might be.

I've cleaned all of the top ECU terminal blocks with electronic contact cleaner and given the fusebox under the bonnet a once over too. Nothing looks out of place or corroded on either.

I'll try running PP2000 again tonight and see if anything new crops up. I've got the SEDRE DVDs, so my next port of call is the wiring digrams, to follow the digital field wire back to see where it terminates at the other end from the alternator, so I can check those connections. I need to work out how it senses the battery voltage and how it works with the alternator.

I'm also getting my old alternator checked over later this week.

Yes, the only earth point that looked even remotely suspect was the one on the wheel arch, below the fuse box under the bonnet. That was cleaned up and the remainder were clean.

Use planet to check voltages with engine running if below 13 V double check the alternator it could be a faulty recon. Can you get the Alternator you removed checked to see if its working as that would help identify if the original fault was alternator or wiring etc related.

That's the plan, Windy, my old one is being checked out on Friday. The recon one is noisy (bearing noise I think) and if my original one checks out OK, it's going back on, as that one is quiet.

Can you guide me through monitoring the voltage, as I'm new to Peugeot Planet? I've got version 7.15, based on what DiagBox tells me.

if that fails do a drain test on the battery with the car off.

the guy i brought my car off was sure it had a fault. i measured it and no current loss
