Problem selecting gears

I have a 2004 Boxer 2.0 HDI. Over the last few months it has become increasingly difficult to select gears. Often first from cold is fine. The most difficult is from 3rd or 4th down to 2nd, and 5th down to 3rd or 4th.
It's as if the stick cannot find the slot.
When changing up, it seems that 1st and 3rd are too close, yet I have to yank the stick hard to the right to find 5th.
To get any gear, I must move the stick into place, as there's no 'spring' as there used to be.
Reverse is never a problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
