Question Partner 2006 plate 1.6 DI gear selection

I have an 06 partner but the downshifts are difficult, a mechanic has checked the outer linkages which are ok but feels the inner linkages have failed. Can anyone offer advise or recommend a repair alternative to replacing the box itself? I am in Reading and am currenlty looking for a repairer to depending on cost. Thanks.

Hi Keith
So the van changes up the box fine, but is stiff/notchy on all down changes?
Cheers

Default Gearbox

Hello Chris

Changing up is fine but going from 5th to fourth and 3rd to second it loses its way, for eg you almost select reverse when downshifting from 5th to 4th.
The external linkage is fine but the arm where it enters into the gear box has little or no resistance. I have been told it would be easier to replace the box but this I am mtrying to avoid.
Thanks Keith

Keith
ok so it does sound internal/selector mechanism related (out of 5th into 4th and out of 3rd into 2nd is going to be related.)
Sorry I dont know this gearbox in detail but i agree it seems a shame to change the whole box for this fault. Have you tried any manual transmission specialists, its the sort of thing they might have come across before?
I work in Banbury and know people that have used "banbury gearboxes"
they seem to be switched on and know whats what.
On some gearboxes there are bolts on the outside that you can remove to access springs etc that are gear selection related. Might be worth investigating?
A place in Witney called "storm autos" has helped me out with pug stuff before, appreciate its not that close but might help over the phone.

Thanks Chris, I have tried some repairers in Reading but they all want to replace, I sort of understand that. I think it needs someone who works at a gearbox centre who wants a private cash job, that would do the trick.
