You need to get No. 1 piston to top dead centre. I've never done an XUD, but there is a locking pin hole in the block, to insert an 8mm rod or bolt through into a corresponding hole in the flywheel. Obviously it's near the bottom of the block where the bellhousing bolts onto the block. From my literature, it's beneath a water pipe outlet. This locks the crankshaft in the correct position.
Then the camshaft pulley must be locked, with an 8mm x 40 bolt into the head, with the pulley at about 4 o'clock (viewed as the engine sits in the vehicle), and then two 8mm x 40 bolts in the diesel pump pulley at about 1 o'clock and 5 o'clock. With these four locking pins in place, the engine is timed properly and you can fit the belt |

i seem to remember theres a few holes around the flywheel but the correct one is the only one that is exactly the same size as the hole where the rod slides through the block. if your engine has a dust plate under the engine you could unbolt it to look for the correct hole
