Expert 2.0 HDi, no 4th gear

Hi all, I have looked through the forums for help with this, have found similar posts but not exactly the same.

I have an expert HDi on an 02 plate, in December 2010 4th gear just stopped working. No pre warnings, the stick will just not go into the 4th gear position.

I had a retired mechanic friend have a quick look for me, he checked the linkages but this didnt appear to be the problem. Its fine in all the other gears, and pulls fine, no signs of slipping etc. I dont want to go to the garage and spend loads of dosh if anyone can suggest anything to check first (apart from a gallon of petrol and a box of matches!) Looks like you`ll have to go into the gearbox and check cogs or just replace
