Expert 1.9 engine performance

Good morning all; I have an Expert 1.9 non-turbo, 2006 model, 45,000 miles. The van has been serviced regularly etc. The van starts perfect and has no other issues. The problem is this - when i'm driving along the engine gains performance/loses performance, the lights can shine brighter/or go dimmer, and the other night whilst driving in the dark i noticed the battery light flickering dimly. The van seems always to be underpowered, maybe as a result of this fault. Can anyone assist?
