Default excessive engine clatter 2001 800 lx diesel

Hi ALL,
I'll probably be posting as and when I discover things on my new van.
I've just taken it out for a short drive and there seemed to be excessive engine noise.
Sounds like normal diesel noise just a lot louder and more clattery when accelerating in first and second. I Havnt taken it far so engine prob hasnt warmed up ,but can anyone let me know what I should be saying to the guys at the garage as to what its likely to be, It still has 2 months warranty so would like to sort out any issues like this. Would like to think that I am saying the right things so they check them.
cheers
simon

just come back from longer run and the noise abates considerably back to what I would call normal diesel noise when the engine has warmed up.
so when its cold and moving up the revs or up hill and under load its pretty unbearable by comparison.
any ideas would be much appreciated.

there could be a number of reasons tbh, heres a few considerations:

when was the oil and oil filter last done
air filter
timing belt/chain (if old and done loads of miles) - less likely.
clutch and gears
general wear and tear on the engine

just to name a few

hope this helps

Hi again ,
the van has been quiet for some time, but on the way back from work today the same old noise came back. not quite as vicious as last time.
In response to the last reply the oil , fuel and air filters were all changed prior to me buying from the dealer, have no reason to disbelieve him.
I had been on the road for a good few miles so the engine was running at normal temp when all of a sudden the clatter came back.
I stopped to have a listen under the bonnet and as far as I can make out its coming from the cylinder block.
I did take it back to the dealer but the bloomin thing was running as a normal diesel engine should. He gave me some injector cleaning fluid to put in the tank which I have done.

If anyone has any ideas i'd be grateful

cheers

hi there,
thanks for the offer. It aint an hdi and (touch wood ) it hasnt happened since I posted, which must have been ages ago. So fingers crossed and allthat it seems to have rectified itself. I spoke to the guy I bought it off as it was under warranty for a short period and he reckoned it may have been due to not very much use for the year before I bought it. Sounded like a bit of a fob off but as long as its not doing it I dont mind.
cheers anyway jon
