Default Boxer 270D fuel problem

I have a W reg Boxer with a 2.4 diesel engine in - only 20,000 miles. The van has run well up to now but suddenly developed a fault. It lost power and the engine started pinking, also the exhaust developed a different smell - sort of unburnt fuel smell.
I got towed home (engine idled all the way) and left the van at my local garage. The mechanic seems lost on this and says he needs it diagnosed which will mean an expensive trip to a peugeot garage.
The RAC man thought it might be the exhaust gas recirculation valve - where is it, will it need replacement or can it be repaired, how much is a new one, is it easily fitted? Anyone had this trouble before?
Thanks
Tom
