Just wondering really - does an ecu remap actually increase mpg.
Or shall I get my coat? |

![]() I guess that you'd have to ask yourself, first of all, do you ever use the full performance of the car (foot to the floor) in its current state of tune? Would the car actually still drive OK if you took a bit of pressure off of the accelerator pedal in normal driving? Ask yourself if a remap could possibly achieve a lower C02 figure than the car is achieving at the moment? If you look at this typical remap/original map graph, you'll see that there's very little difference in power or torque where the engine rpm would normally be when the car is being driven economically (1500 to 2000 rpm). The real gains only arrive when your not in eco-mode. Also bear in mind that all of the maximum figures you see here at all rpm are only achieved with your foot firmly planted to the floor! You will normally drive the car at a fraction of full throttle, so the lines on the graph would be lower down and much closer together, regardless of which map you were using. Indeed if you do a rolling road run with both maps at part throttle, there is no difference at all. ![]() The other thing that remaps tend to do is make the accelerator pedal more sensitive, it's just one of the parameters in the ECU that 'mappers' can mess around with, which gives you the impression of having to use less pedal travel (and in your head, less fuel) to keep the same speed. Don't be fooled! You'll still be using the same amount of fuel to go at the same speed, regardless of accelerator pedal position. It's a little bit like pushing the 'Sport' button on some Vauxhalls. You don't get any more power or torque, but the accelerator pedal makes it feel like you do. What you soon realise is that full throttle isn't as near to the floor as it used to be! No, wait. This is where it gets to be fun.

They can be made to improve the cars power output.
They can be made to improve the cars fuel consumption. But it won't do both at the same time. Simples.

I once owned a Skoda Octavia SDI 1.9 estate (a red one). 65 bhp and 100 ft/lbs of torque. Or roughly about half of everything that my current 3008 has. It did 55-60 mpg, no matter how you seemed to drive it (those were the days). Why is that? I hear you cry. Well, the truth is, that even that meager amount of torque and bhp in my ancient Skoda was enough to tug it around at normal speeds as were damn near no different to anything else that was out there on the roads. It wasn't a fireball, but it would get you where you were going without feeling that it was ever out of its depth.
Has increasing the power and torque by two-fold done anything for the economy of my Peugeot? No. It doesn't even come close. Will increasing power and torque a bit more help? No. I shouldn't think so. Is it actually likely to increase fuel consumption? Probably. But If I 'try' to drive more slowly........ Do I still get cut up in traffic by drivers of two tone Skoda Octavia SDI's? Last edited by Bird dog; 08-05-2011 at 05:46 PM. |
