Default Foam Air Filters

Hi,

Recently put in a foam air filter (Pipercross) in replacement for my old paper one. I've read that it allows the engine to breathe more easily, but at what cost? Will the improved airflow also allow more dirt/dust to enter my engine?

I've heard that these can mess around with the MAF and oil too. Is this true?

Just wanted to know your experiences with air filters.

Thanks

sometimes look pretty, but usually do next to sod all. I'm sure it said on the box an instant 10 bhp gain or something though

Yeah, well it reckoned a 3-5bhp and 3-5lbft gain.

I wasn't concerned with the gain of the filter - it would make no 'feelable' difference. I am just concerned with helping my engine 'breathe' now it has been remapped.

The idea of not having to ever replace it sounds good to me also

I just wonder about its filtration ability , especially as it's meant to increase airflow

The reason that they mess with the MAF is because of the oil.

And yes, it is true that they can mess with the MAF. but if fitted well that shouldn't be a worry.

Hi I've had pipercorss filters on all my cars and NEVER had a problem with the maf. I've also had most types of the from the in box panel to the full blown viper. Yes they help it breath better but there not that much oil on them just make sure you keep it clean and it will work fr years.

I suppose its all down to the extra money that can be made in replacement parts.

No doubt its more lucrative for a car manufacturer to fit a throwaway paper filter system that will be replaced quickly, easily and frequently rather than something which is cleaned and returned to the car.

As for the size difference, you couold compare it to soundproofing. You can get stuff which is a few MM thick or be cheap and use eggboxes, but both would do the same job!
