If you have fitted a 1.9 diesel engine to a 2.0 GTI gearbox, you will probably find that all of the gear ratios are useless. This is because a diesel engine revs to around 4,000 rpm maximum, whereas a petrol engine revs to around 6,000 rpm (around a 33% difference).
I had a mate that once fitted a Vectra 3.2 GSI gearbox to his Vectra 2.2 DTI (both use same gearbox but with different final drive ratios). This resulted in a diesel engine that not only used much more diesel, but also was much slower and much noisier. Bad idea! In general, diesels are geared much higher than petrol engines. Even the 2.2 DTI Vectra is geared much higher than a 3.2 GSI Vectra. The GSI uses all the same gearbox ratios that the 2.2 DTI does, but has a much lower final drive ratio (4.05 to 1 compared to 3.61 to 1 for the DTI). To give you some idea of the problem. My mates 2.2 DTI was running at over 10 mph less in top gear at 2,000 rpm (top speed was cut by 20 mph). Which probably meant that he would have been much better off with the 2.2 petrol engine! Your best bet is to see if you can see, on the current gearbox, what the final drive ratio is (usually stamped on it somewhere). And then compare it to the ratio on the diesel engined gearbox. Ideally the diesel engined gearbox needs to have a much lower number (higher ratio) than your current gearbox. The lower the better. Last edited by Bird dog; 10-02-2011 at 01:07 PM. |
