Default 806 Hdi 16v Broken camshaft chain?

Our 2001 806 2.0 Hdi 16 valve just cut out whilst travelling on the M25 at 55mph. The AA diagnosed a broken cam belt however I have removed the covers & the belt is intact. But the AA guy was looking with a mirror through the oil filler cap on the rocker cover at the chain sprocket & fwd camshaft & these do indeed remain stationary during cranking. The engine spins without any mechanical noises. Is there any chance that these valves clear the pistons? I have never read of this chain failing before.
Any thoughts appreciated

Simon.
