Just updated my iphone 3gs to the new version 5 software and lost 2000 songs

If they were from iTunes you should be able to re-download them without paying. You didn't have it sync'd to your computer then??

On itunes, just right click your iphone and backup......

Yup, what's probably happened is that it's recognised your PC as a new one and resynched to it in the process of the upgrade.
What you could do is nip back to your brothers and resync it to his. There is a way round it to duplicate his itunes ID onto your machine, but as you don't have the songs anymore (on your phone or on your PC), it's unfortunately too late
