    Thanks for the reply. The ABS light came on initially, the speedo still works ok. I replaced the battery after the car started misfiring. I have not had the codes read but I'm guessing the garage I took it to did a read but I have no report.
    I get the feeling the electronics on these vehicles are devilishly hard to diagnose when they fail. I would dearly like to get the car roadworthy but if it's not economical I'll just have to flog it spares or repairs. The problem I have is I cannot find anyone that can diagnose with confidence and recommend a repair. What do you think?

    Have you had the codes read, ABS and power steering faults can often be interlinked with one triggering the other. No speed signal or steering angle signals can cause the issue as can faulty battery or alternator however these also normally trigger airbag faults as well
