Smile three easy questions...

help me out guys?

i've just gotten me a 307 2.00 HDI, 03 plate. top trim level, to use for a few years, it's clocked 137k, but i need RELIABILITY. i only do about 5k a year, as i use a bike when i can. so, indulge me... a few simple questions:

engine identification:
when i add my details to confused dot com or other insurers, the description comes up as a 110bhp model, but the garage and spares shop enter my reg number and come up with the 90 bhp engine. i need to do a few jobs on it, and i don't want to order parts for a 90 when it's a 110 and vice-versa. so... how to i tell the difference without a rolling road? is there a chart responding to engine numbers, or can i tell by checking something under the bonnet to identify the engine? surely there's something visible that i can check? maybe the engine has been changed in it's past history or something? dunno, but stuff's expensive if you're buying the wrong stuff...

Clutch:
ok, there's a manual on the way, but somebody break this down for me.. are we talking jack-up, support engine, take off wheels, remove drive shafts, pull gearbox out, change clutch and bolt together again, or am i letting myself in for a shit job? i've done clutches on other FWD cars, and mostly it's a piece of piss, some are more involved. (for those spanner-savvy amongst you, tell me straight: straight forward or a pain in the ass?) also i'm hearing a lot about changing the duel mass flywheel (if it has one) for a standard single mass flywheel and corresponding clutch. anyone had any experience of this? apparently you notice an uneven tick-over?

the reason i'm looking at changing my clutch is twofold, firstly, the "biting point" seems high, maybe this is just a 307 thing, i've noticed no slipping, but a slight judder whilst reversing uphill, i'm told (by some guy in the pub, admittedley) that there is a sensor that stops this happening, as it senses you're riding the clutch and increased the revs??? hmm. seems odd, but i thought i'd check with you guys, as if the cluth naturally rides high, and it's just a silly sensor needs changing it's be costly and a pain in my ass to rip the car to bits if it's an easy fix. remember, it's got over 130k on the clock, and i need reliability. which brings me on to the next question...

cambelt:
whilst i have every reason to believe the cam-belt HAS been changed, i'd rather do it anyway. again, spanner savvy - what are we talking here? i was taught a trick years ago, which involved loosening tentioners, cutting the cambelt along it's length, and sneaking a new one on half-way, then cutting the rest away and shoving the new one home. it's an easy trick and has saved me HOURS in lining up timing marks etc. can i do this with the 2.00HDI or are we talking jacks, wheels off, inspection panels out etc?. whilst i'm at it buying stuff do i replace tensioners/ waterpump etc?

the electric mirrors:
how comes my driver's side mirror doesn't always flip out when the ignition is switched on, i have to plip the car locked, plip it unlocked, and put the keys back in (it usually works second time) will some maintainance spay sort this, or is a motor about to fail?

any jobs that i could do whilst doing the above that are "preventitive maintainance" please advise, i'd rather spend a few quid and a few hours on it now, than have it pack up while i'm taking the baby from town to town.

fankyoo,

S.V.
