Problem with 106 ignition

I live in Australia and own an imported Peugeot 106 xn 1997 model. Last week the key got jammed in the ignition and will not release no matter how much I have fiddled with it (the key is jammed between the off and lock position and the steering wheel lock will not engage). As a result I can no longer start the car.
I have had a locksmith look at it and he referred me to a local peugeot service centre. I have been told that the car needs a new ignition barrel, which is a very expensive part replacement since it has to be shipped from France to Australia and then be customized to my original keys.
I have not come across any other Peugeot 106's here in Australia and therefore parts are extremely difficult to come by and usually require an order from overseas.
Has anyone had a similar problem with their 106 and can offer some advice?
