Default How old are your tyres?

I recently acquired a low mileage 309 advertised (in all good faith) with good tread on all tyres.

After the purchase, however, I did note a little bit of sidewall cracking, also steering was a little heavier than I might have expected with a slight pull to the left.

I checked the DOT code on the tyres and found that the whole lot were made in 2001 !

Five years is recommended maximum for tyres.

Am now in the hole for £96 (new front) and £50 (part-worn rear) which has put my budget out of kilter! That said, steering and ride much improved and steering pull has disappeared.

So, if you buying a car, then check the age (see Tire Tech Information - Determining the Age of a Tire for a good guide) and bargain accordingly.

A.

You must have got quite a rare one there, I don't know of many cars where they are used that little the tyres would last for 5yrs.

Mine normally do 18-24months @ 15-20k miles per year, but I used to rotate the wheels front to back and wear them all evenly and change the lot in one go.
