help, revving n burning

hi, my 206 is a 04 plate and has done this once or twice before but not like this. was driving today and when i was pressing the clutch down to change gear and bringing it up was just revving, the rpms were going crazy and the car was just say moving. i could also smell something burning. it eventually kicked in after about 10-20 seconds. when i got back in the car it then wouldnt start without pumping accelerator. but then drove ok.

i am useless (i am a girl afterall!! haha) at anything mechanical. spoke to the garage and they said it sounds like its a "cuts" fault but they dont deal with them. any ideas?

am i safe to keep driving? or am i going to make it worse? ive read that this is a common fault with peugots.
