Hi
This is my first post so apologies for coming in with a strong query. I am very worried about this problem though so hoping someone can help. A few weeks back I was in my Peugeot 407 SE HDI and broke hard to stop at some traffic lights. As I was stopping a warning flashed up on the screen stating "ESP/ASR System Fault" and was then quickly followed with "speed system fault". I was able to get rid of the speed system fault simply by switching off the cruise control selection switch thing on the steering column stork. However, it would return if I put it back on. The ESP fault would no go though even though I was pressing the button to switch off ESP. During this though the car drove fine and if it weren't for the beeping you would thing it was fine. I pulled over and switched off engine and when I switched it back on the ESP fault returned. I did this once more and this time the fault disappeared. The problem had not occurred again and the car was driving fine until yesterday morning when on the drive to work the exact same problem occurred and the same process removed the faults (from the screen and beeping) only for them to again return today 3 times. I wondered if it was the Cruise Control interfering somehow so switched this off (I normally leave it on and just activate it by pressing the paddle to set the speed) but have since gone on a test drive this evening and found that the fault for ESP returned on its own. Again though pulling over switching off the engine and back on made it think it was fine and I was okay to drive off only for it to not happen again over the next 20 minutes try as I might to cause it. It seems to come on when I am braking and then throw a wobbly until I switch off the engine. At which point it will kick up the error again but when I drive off realise its okay actually and disappear. I am really worried about this partly because of the cost aspect but mainly because I use it to take my daughter to nursery every day and really worried the car is unsafe. Please help |

Hi,
You really need to get fault codes read to be sure of what the problem is. Most common fault on 407's is the faulty abs sensors which would bring this fault up. I've had this on a couple of occasions and drove the car for months like this and I know others that have done the same. Try and find someone close to you with planet take a look at the list in the link below Diagnostic (Peugeot Planet) Map Cris.

Okay I have just rung the AA actually who apparently will be able to read fault codes. Will that be the same thing?
If it is the ABS sensor is that a pricey affair? I really shouldn't read the internet after 5pm I think as I have been reading stuff about ABS pumps needing replacing at £1500 Excuse my ignorance here but if it is the sensor at fault will the fault code tell me that? |

Sensors are £30 to £40 plus fitting.
Depends on what AA use to read codes!! But codes will tell you which of the four sensors are faulty if that is the fault!!

Well Mr AA man has just left and he managed to get the fault to appear by applying the brake really hard in a stationary position and at the same time the brake light DID NOT come on. Then the fault appeared and went away after and restart of engine and reapplication of brakes when the light decided to work again. He therefore thinks its probably the brake switch which apparently isn't that costly. However, without doing diagnostics in the ABS (he only had engine management which showed nothing) he couldn't tell 100% and recommended I get these done to confirm his findings.
So I will now be trying to find someone cheaper than Peugeot (who want £96+vat for diagnostics) to hopefully confirm it's a brake switch! Apologies for the poor layout of this reply. I'm doing it on my iPhone! |
