Default 1994 407 bad ABS/ESP sensor

Hello guys (and gals..)

My 407 is giving me ABS/ESP faults and is running permanently in ESP mode...when we hooked up the computer, the result was something like -

left front wheel ABS sensor open or shorted
right rear wheel ABS sensor open or shorted

My limited knowledge would lead me to believe that the sensors are bad and need to be changed. However, my mechanic is telling me that he sensors are good, but the something is wrong with the car's suspension which is causing this problem.....

Does anybody know if the cars suspension could cause the computer to say that a sensor is open or shorted?

Thanks.
Ian

Firstly Hello Ian.
How were the faults read???
The abs sensors are quite a common fault on our 407's indeed just a few weeks ago i changed both of my rears because of this.

I personally have never heard of the suspension causing this fault, but hey you never know,
Has your car got the standard suspension or the electronic trickery type??
Neil

Neil,

I don't know exactly what the faults were read with. It was not a laptop, but a portable device that the mechanic hooked up to my car....with his device you could select between manufacturers - nissan, toyota etc....

he selected peugoet and 407 then did a diagnostic.

The device even printed out a little ticket with the error messages...

The issue that I have is that the message was very SPECIFIC..."sensor open or shorted"

I don't see how a bad suspension could cause a sensor to be open or shorted...

Also, it's the normal suspension I have..

thanks for the time/interest.

Ian

If youve got 'normal' suspension, your abs sensors are at fault, someone with more knowledge of diagnostics will no doubt be along soon.
Not trying to cause an argument or nothing here BUT, how long have you had your 407 and how often have you used this mechanic/garage in the past??

this will be down to the air gap on sensors.

i had the same on my 307 also this may sound stupid as when i got a flat tyre i used a 14'' steel rim as my 5th alloy was at home and it came up abs/esp fault before i changed the tyre it was fine by just changing a tyre to a smaller wheel the computer knows and it stayed like that till i got the 17'' alloy back on,

my dad had a 2007 C4 and put new tyres on 205/50/17 tyres to 205/45/17 and mile up the road the esp/asr abs came on the dash and drove into the dealer he said the wrong tyres are fitted he told my dad just to drive the car as the computer will adjust to the new tyres, very smart i said he told me his wifes 307 done the same but never adjusted for the new tyres something to do with older system, anyhow got home and he headed out later that night and the lights where off.

I have not had my 407 very long...about 5 months...this mechanic did some 'normal' mechanic work for me - changing belts, plugs, changing injector seals...

I am losing a bit of confidence in him when it comes to the diagnostics though.

BTW...it's a 2004 peugeot 407 - not a 1994 as mentioned in the title (I was just off by decade....heh)

Do you know if it is possible to just disable the ABS/ESP function?

whereabouts are you??? there may be someone from here very close to you with planet who can help you out.
I dont believe the abs/esp thing can be turned off, but, and i speak from experience here, you do get used to the beep, it was part of my start-up procedure for way too long.

turn key wait for heater-plug light to go out
engine starts 2 beeps and were away

I'm located in Trinidad&Tobago in the Caribbean......

There is a local dealer here, but of course they are super expensive.....might have to bite the bullet and go though....

the problem I have is not with the beep, but the car is defaulting to ASR/ESP mode and running like that ALL the time....it is sluggish and rolls back on hills......

I need the following parts - oil filter, air filter, front abs sensor, back abs sensor fuel filter...anyone know where I can buy these things online?

Thanks,
Ian
