Default Hello from North Devon!

Hi All,

I just bought my second 406 R (98) 1.9TD. It has FSH as it's always been in the family (Uncle in-law..!) 12 Months MOT, 7 months tax, 127k Miles, new timing belt, new aux belt, new clutch, new pads, new shoes, new front stabilizer links, recent service. Body is in great quality with no dents. Interior was really dirty (dash and plastics not seats) so I spent yesterday sorting that out and it looks like new again! Cost £650!

I said second, yup I had a a 406 a few years ago. 1.8 petrol. Was a T with really low mileage and immaculate in every way. Unfortunately an old man crashed into the back of me doing 40mph and shortened it by about a foot!

I have one small niggle with the new one, the U-J nearest the rack is a bit seized so I get a "clunk" in the steering. It developed while the car was sat from a month. ( I test drove it before and it was fine) So Everyday I'm getting underneath and giving it a good spray of WD40 iin the hope of freeing it up. After two days it's not intermittent so hopefully with a few more sprays it will have gone. It's not an easy job for the home mechanic as the access isn't good!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to having a good look around the forum!

Hello and welcome
how sure are you that it's the universal joint??
i ask because lots of people from another 406 site have had a clunk from the strut-top caused by wear.
just a thought

Yeah, I have come across the same threads! I'm not sure, because I get the clunk in the same place every time, and also when the car is on stands. I.E. without the weight of the vehicle putting pressure on the suspension gear. Could be the bearing at the top of the strut though maybe?

Hmmmmm....

My strut top bearing wouldn't rattle with the weight off it. Took me ages to find because of this! Just my experience...
