Default What options does our young un' have?

Now then!

Righto, it's our lad's 17th today (Monday) and he's not got many options for a motor.

I've found out that a 1.9D 306 is much cheaper to insure than a 1.0 Corsa. Obviously it's just the diesel, not a turbo. I love the 306 anyway so quite happy with that.

The best quote he can get with provisional license is around £1350, which is canny enough. However when he passes his test and gets the full UK license, it's £3800ish!

Now, that's just shocking. The best insurance quote he can get is £3800... How ridiculous is that?

Now that I've had a think, and can't work out what to do, my best opinion is for him to just learn and pass his test, then wait.

But £3800.... He may aswell just drive uninsured and pay a £1k bribe if he gets caught!!! Don't take me as serious, I wouldn't advise that..

Howay Night-Shift-Man (John) gimme something to read when I wake up

haha you know me too well!

i noticed this aswell when i passed my test and i bet elmafudd might say a few words regarding his situation.

but anyways are you just looking at full comp or third party fire and theft or even just third party.

if i was in his shoes, id just take third party f&t as you wont get much in terms of a payout on an old (ish) car such as a 306 in a fully comp scenerio so it wouldnt be worth the money. I would also add a parent or someone who has loads of driving licence time and no claims as a named driver (clearly the yound lad as main...no fronting here ) this will drop it a little.

i would also play around saying the car is either parked on a driveway or street and see what is cheaper for you....if you have a driveway that is.

any driving licence add-ons are also good for discounts such as IAM (widely recognised) and Pass Plus... again they are a bit noddy and require investment to see a return.

i would also use the price comparison websites to see who the top 3 cheapest are. Ring them direct, cut the middle man out and save more still, and play them off one another. get chatting to the rep as a mate etc and you'll be amazed with what they offer.

for example, before i passed my test i was insured as main driver with provisional licence and was paying £150 (ish iirc) a month, fully comp and with my dad as named driver. when i passed i rang back the insurer to inform them of licence change and address change...they wanted £400 deposit and £300 a month! screw that and told them where they can go whistle...

so i rang my current insurer, they gave me a few years NCB to reduce my premium. (even after my crash they gave me 1 years NCB). a policy where postcode does not effect premium and all optional extras free and the guy had it on the National Insurance Database in 1 hour! so that i could go out and drive! i paid no deposit and did the 9 months of £130 and 3 months no payment. after my crash, in a bigger car im paying £200 a month. but will go down aslong as i stay good.

This is one thing thats always annoyed me

Considering having insurance is legally required why isnt there some type of government scheme in place to regulate prices?

It was the same for my brother when he was 19. It just goes to show that groupings are a joke. When I went from the group 6(?) 307 to the group 16 407 my insurance went down by 2p!

Exactly gibbo. Insurance grouping is a load of tosh.

And John I think I'll give that a go. No harm in trying to haggle.

Another Q. Do I have to declare a non-fault claim on my quotes? Because I did and it put my premium up by £100 ish. And I find that unacceptable since I was the one that got mashed up and it wasn't my flipping fault

It's sick how the world ticks sometimes

unfortunately so...you wouldnt want to need a payout from insurance for them to deny since you lied on application etc. i bet if you say your point in a friendly way over the phone like chatting to them, they might discount that aswell

One good thing about being a BOF. Just got my renewal quote through. £185 for the year, fully comp, guaranteed no claims..

Malcolm.

Don't think the 407 is that high.... group 8 for the 1.6 and group 10 for the 2.0

407 has probably got a higher safety rating than the 307, hence reduced insurance
