Default Watchdog, BBC1 Thurs - DPFs

Well surprise surprise Watchdog tonight did about DPFs!

I didn't catch it all but in the end they got statements from Fiat and Nissan and they admitted that their crappy small diesels aren't designed for short city driving and that their salesmen now recommend petrol or electric cars.

But did the salesman advice you to do regular long high rev runs to keep the DPF regenerated, which was the whole point of the article, diesels with PDF's are not suitable for urban driving - allegedly.
Malcolm.

Malcolm.

First if the salesman did would make no difference here near birmingham as urban driving is same on motorways here or shall i say like being on a ncp carpark and personally i am not bothered as its through motability any problems they can sort it .

And at least there is a warning light in the qashqai to let you know it needs regenerating where in the peugeot first thing you know is that you have dpf fault no warning .

It says it in my 407 coupe hand book that it's not suitable for short city driving or for living on the jersey isles

My first experience of it was when I bought a second hand 53 plate Punto 1.3 diesel.

I know Fiats get the old jokes of Fix It Again Tomorrow and the like but it was a mechanically sound little car. A few too many cabin rattles but some strategically placed sponge soon sorted then.

It was only when it started going into limp mode when I gave it some stick that I started to find the problem - the engine was gunked up in diesel muck. It looked like it had done 100,000 miles, not 30,000. The EGR valve was completely blocked and the air carrying pipes and MAF were full of oily residue.

The previous owner had looked after it but she'd only used it around Wigan, never went on any dual carriageways (Wigan doesn't have any) or the motorway.

I got it cleaned up eventually but wonder if it had caused premature wear. I went back to an old P reg 306 diesel which drove smoother and better!

In the qashqai there is a warning light so you can give it a run to regen and watchdog showed a 2007 qashqai which they only put the dpf in the 2.0 and not the 1.5 so very misleading towards owners or anyone wanting to purchase second hand model 1.5dci.
