Lightbulb starting the car - your opinion

hi folks,

just after everyones opinion on regarding starting the car. sounds weird, i know, but i thought about this when a colleague at work let me take his brand new astra for a test drive around the camp.

to start the car, you had to dip the clutch.

is there any benefit to this? yeah i know you have to on cars like that to start it...but i mean with any car...is it beneficial?

my dad says yes as it puts less strain on the engine, especially a diesel...i dont know what to think...

whats your opinions

Suppose it means you aren't turning the gearbox too but I can't see a huge benefit! You have to in my volvo but it has an auto-start so its more to stop you dozing the guy in front!

yeah i see what you mean, he also has an electronic brake so you have to put your foot on the footbrake to release the park brake and the same to put it on...i can see why but he admitted he rather prefer the manual handbrake...and surely enough i didnt feel safe and confident enought with a fiddly little switch to stop my car and hold it.

one good thing tho, he can change the colour of his ambient lights and speedo to anything on the menu list!

but i was laughing at him last winter with all the snow, as with all that kit he has in that car, he couldnt drive it and on a few occasions i had to use my focus to pull him in the car parks!

like to see what other people have to say on this clutch dipping for starting? if its good im going to try and make it a habbit of mine. as i just sit and turn key, put seatbelt on and then ignite the engine, no peddles pressed.

I always dip the clutch before starting - just habbit so as to make sure no gears are engaged
The engine does seem to start better, as in quieter, but this could be a coincidence

jmkent, i always dip the clutch as well when starting.

I think it is a course of habit but if you start in gear and forgot to dip the clutch it certainly wakes you up.

Does seem to be quiter with the clutch prssed down .

I always dip the clutch cos some twonk (me) always leaves the car in gear.
From a safety side its a good idea but with modern oil's and batteries and everything i cant really see the benefit.

Even worse when someone is looking under the bonnet for you and says.................... turn it over for me and its in gear. Possible kneecap experience.

I did that once in my project Nova! Nearly pissed myself! My mate was less than impressed! Note: Don't start car through window....
