Ease off the right foot - you'll get 60+ mpg easy.

I get similar figures to you for my 407.... and thats heavier, more grunt, and therefore should need more juice.
Heavy right foot then.... or just excessive fuel consumption??

when was the last full service carried out? ie oil and all filters...
also i find resetting the car helps improve mpg for a short while, by disconnecting the battery for 10 mins.

The 407's HDi is thermally more efficient, has a nice tall 6th gear, and the car is much more aerodynamic.
Word is that the old 8v HDi's economy can fall off noticeably with mileage, but 45 MPG is just on the lower end of the acceptable ballpark. Tales of people getting 60-70 MPG out of these in mixed driving is utter tosh, the legend having grown with time. The reality is in the 40's for mixed motoring, maybe around 60 on a very long run with a seriously disciplined right foot. They were good for their time, but it's a 15 year old engine design derived from an already 9 year old engine design, which was in turn based on a basic block that went back to the late 70's, so expecting modern MPG figures is a little unrealistic.
