Ease off the right foot - you'll get 60+ mpg easy.

I get similar figures to you for my 407.... and thats heavier, more grunt, and therefore should need more juice.

Heavy right foot then.... or just excessive fuel consumption??

when was the last full service carried out? ie oil and all filters...

also i find resetting the car helps improve mpg for a short while, by disconnecting the battery for 10 mins.

it had its last service about a 1000 miles before i headed off to cornwall....so its done about 2-2.5k since its last service....to be fair its been like this since i owned it last november. It does some wierd kind of flap out at about 1100-1200 revs when you hold it there. kind of like a miss...(i know, diesels don't miss). let me explain....if you hold the revs at 1200...it kind of holds it then drops then holds it again then drops....this only happens every now and then although since being back it has happened alot more....i might add it didn't do it at all in cornwall...i did notice last night when it was doing it, it also makes the lights dim for that split sec till it catches it again....really wierd and no doubt one of them things no-one has a clue about so until it breaks properly im just gonna leave it....Remember years ago you used to get a diaphram in a old petrol carb....when that went you would get the same sort of flap out im on about here....also it does feel fuel related....just for the record i have no faults on planet...i have no dpf issues, i have a slight dmf/clutch issue. No mil light, my maf does nothing when disconnected car feels exactly same just a bit more powerless....wow ive ranted on again....ill leave ya's with that for now.....thanks guys....

one last thing....aint got a clue how to get to the egr so haven't even thought about trying to get that out...may just leave that to st peters ind peugeot specialist.

The 407's HDi is thermally more efficient, has a nice tall 6th gear, and the car is much more aerodynamic.

Word is that the old 8v HDi's economy can fall off noticeably with mileage, but 45 MPG is just on the lower end of the acceptable ballpark. Tales of people getting 60-70 MPG out of these in mixed driving is utter tosh, the legend having grown with time. The reality is in the 40's for mixed motoring, maybe around 60 on a very long run with a seriously disciplined right foot. They were good for their time, but it's a 15 year old engine design derived from an already 9 year old engine design, which was in turn based on a basic block that went back to the late 70's, so expecting modern MPG figures is a little unrealistic.
