The temperature gauge on my 306 Meridian (1999) goes into the red when driving. After driving the car for a short distance I have to refill the water as it drops below the minimum marker. The temperature gauge drops slightly if I have the heater turned to hot whilst driving. What could this be?

Dreaded head gasket or a leak somewhere, check oil to see if creamy.
