Default Oil Dipstick

Dipstick tip snapped off, do I have to get it removed from the sump or ok to run, obviously need a new stick, how easy/long to remove the sump?

This must be my area since i have 2 x 307`s , one has a dipstick piece in sump the other has 2 pieces in the sump,
(50k miles done and 4 oil changes since it happened)

both cars have a dipstick with no end in the engine ,
my new dipstick is in the garage when it only comes out to check oil levels,
and no the bits in the sump will not do any harm,

plastic dipstick -hot engine -
bet the guy who thought that up is on the dole now
(but knowing the french he probably got promotion),

so buy a new one on ebay and keep the old one in the engine,

hope that helps you to stop worrying.

p.s
i have an extra broken one i can send to someone if they are worried about the one they have in the engine
(if its starting to bend in different directions , shes about to snap off)

Cheers Betty, I had a thought, ah weather nice let's check water oil etc... then wished I hadn't!!!
If it's stuck in the tube I may still see if I can get it out, rather than push it into the sump, do you know if the tube comes away from the sump easily enough?

you can take the tube of but the bit that broke off is below that point and i would say its in the sump now
(went through all this with my first break , then didn`t expect it to happen again TWICE),
forget it by a new dipstick but keep the old one in the car so it doesn`t happen again.
(was worried about the broken bit for a while myself but that was 50k miles ago)

Hi, I'm having a similar problem, but my end seems to be still stuck in the bottom of the pipe. My new dipstick wont go all the way in, sticks out be about half an inch. have tried poking wire down to push it into the sump, but hasnt worked. So i cant currently check the oil level. Its had a fresh oil change at Kwikfit (where the problem was discovered) so that shouldn't be a problem at the moment.

Any ideas would be grately received?

Sump off i`m afraid , you can still check oil , use broken dipstick ,top up slowly keep checking then as soon as it marks the broken bit with oil stop.

Broken bit will do no harm but if you can get it out keep broken dipstick in engine and use new one only for dipping , don`t put it in all the time or the same will happen.

mine is same i just checked.

is there an all metal version i can buy?


also when checking oil now is it "stop" as soon as oil reaches broken off part?

there is no visible writing/marks on the tiny piece of plastic left and the metal rod part is visible at broken off piece of plastic.

Just buy another plastic one for dipping (keep in boot), and keep broken one in car engine

Default Easy way to remove snapped Dipstick - 2002 Petrol 1.4L 206

Hi, After reading a load of these threads it helped me find an easy way to remove the snapped Dipstick from my car. Firstly, thanks for all the great information already here, as it helped massively.

The plastic end of my dipstick snapped off in cold weather. So I thought it best not to start the engine and look online for advice.

The Peugeot Forums told me -
1) Its a very common problem, happening across the Peugeot range.
2) Loads of people say, don't worry about the piece of snapped off plastic it will do no harm.
3) Some people said they bought a new Dipstick, but it would no longer push down properly, we assume it is hitting the old snapped off piece, and the only answer is to remove the sump to retrieve the snapped off bit, which clears the way for the new one to go in properly.
4) Buy a new Dipstick off eBay, but keep the new one you get in the boot. Carry on with the old snapped off Dipstick in place, use it to check the oil. That way the new one isn't subjecting the plastic tip to the every day engine heat, therefore it should not perish and snap (great idea, thanks for that).

Ok, with all of this in mind, I thought I would prefer to remove the snapped off plastic, as it might get chewed up and then cause a blockage or some problem.

Basically - I hooked (taped) a vacuum, to hose pipe, taped the hose to the dipstick tube and sucked for a second. This brought up the snapped off piece to the top of the dipstick neck, where I fished it out with long tweezers!
In fact, the suction brought up 2 snapped off ends, and I retrieved them both!
I was a bit amazed by that, but that tells me a couple of things.
Firstly they snap off a lot, my car is a 14 year old model (66k), and the dipstick has snapped off at least twice, today, and some time previously.
Another thing is that if it snaps, it doesn't go anywhere, it just sits at the bottom of the dipstick tube. So nothing to worry about if it happens to me again!
Finally the people who posted that the dipstick won’t go all the way down, that might be because you have 2 or 3 bits of snapped of plastic sitting at the bottom of the tube!

I will try and attach my pics to the forum, but this is my notes on how I would do it again, if i needed to -
I would tape the hoover to a long length of garden hose, I use cheap parcel tape, its like using gaffer tape, but its much cheaper.
The really long length of hose means I would really struggle to get any oil into my hoover. (My wife would kill me if I ruined her Dyson, she wasn't happy when she 'caught on' to what i was up to anyway!)
With the open end of the hose pipe in my hand, (nowhere near the car) you can turn on the vacuum.
Then all I need to do is dab the open end that sucks onto the top of the dipstick tube for a brief second.
In my case it sucked the bits up in half a second, and you could hear the vacuum change noise, telling me the inlet was blocked.
I did suck up a few drops of oil as well, but it wasn't more than a thimble full. In my case, and I know for a fact the oil level is currently at the top, after a fresh oil change only a week ago.
It would be ideal if the snapped off plastic actually shot into the hose, so I could shake it out, but in my case, both pieces stopped at the top off the tube, I quickly got one with tweezers, but the 2nd slipped down. I applied the vacuum hose for another 1 second, then caught the 2nd with the tweezers.
Whole operation took about 20 minutes.

What you do is entirely up to you, and at your own risk.
But Good luck with it all.
