Default Law on Hazards

What is the law on hazard warning lights in the UK, are there any restrictions on when they should be used.
In Spain, slow trucks on uphills use them and any sign of a slow down in fast traffic it is the norm to turn them on.

Highway code says

116

Hazard warning lights. These may be used when your vehicle is stationary, to warn that it is temporarily obstructing traffic. Never use them as an excuse for dangerous or illegal parking. You MUST NOT use hazard warning lights while driving or being towed unless you are on a motorway or unrestricted dual carriageway and you need to warn drivers behind you of a hazard or obstruction ahead. Only use them for long enough to ensure that your warning has been observed.

So not to nip in the shop .... that seems to be the no.1 use

People do seem to use them more for warning of hazards though... motorways and the like.... definitely seems to happen more these days than a few years ago.

I think most people mistake hazard warning lights to mean 'park anywhere lights'

In Spain, van drivers stop in the middle of the road then open their door as you are passing. normally no indication whatsoever, so no need to get get paranoid

Well a van driver would stay out of this as they have no indicators must be a new law for vans

Instead of installing indicators in a van they just put a huge magnet on the front so the person infront can read the sun on the dashboard of the van
