What do people generally take this to mean?
Is it a warning - a look out I'm here message. Or is it a yes I see you please pull out in front of me? |

When I was an accident investigator, many people thought it meant, "OK, after you", most of them were standing next to a squashed car whilst saying it.
The trouble is that there are some people around who think it means, "Stop! I'm coming through!" and they flash the rest of us or those who are simply fiddling with the control stalk, or those who have just seen a friend, etc

Woman driving towards me while i was sitting waiting to turn right she indicated to turn left (ie the same direction as me ) and flashed her lights at me ,i started to turn she blasted her horn at me and made her turn , i went after her got her to stop and asked her what she was playing at flashing me to go then driving in front of me ,
she gave me a mouthful while saying she didn`t flash her lights ,told her nicely to learn how to control her indications and light switch and left her. ps, Not really told her to f*ck off and that she was a muppet.

So my driving philosophy - everyone is out there to crash into me - seems to be the common sense approach. Reason I mention this - slip road onto M56 - bloke flashed his lights - I refuse to enter the motorway - he has a funny turn and thinks I'm being rude by refusing his invitation to join the motorway. Or was it?

I interpret it by the book to mean 'I am here', the exact opposite of what people usually use it for, and im always mega wary when someone flashes me out of a junction etc as a courtesy - I make up my own mind as to how safe it is before taking them up on their kind offer.

I guess it could be interpreted either way really, either 'excuse me, I'm here!' or 'after you, sir'.
I've always wondered though why when driving on the motorway and I pull into the first lane ('slow lane'), and when I'm literally about half a mile in front in of a wagon, they flash their lights. Any idea why that is? Have I pissed them off or is something hanging off the car or what? And if that is the case, why wait until I'm so far ahead? This isn't just a one off either, has happened a few times. Weird..
